“In the beginning was the Logos”, wrote a philosophical follower of Jesus. “Logos”. The reason, the wisdom, the word of God. Since the earliest times, a favorite word of the philosophers. The world was fashioned by reason from chaos. And every Christian knew that Jesus was the Logos, that Jesus was reason, the very word of God.
The early Philosopher, Heraclitus, first used it for the order behind the disorder we perceive. Philo, that most Greek of Jews, used it to personify the creativity of God and John the Christian used it for Jesus when he wrote his life. In the beginning was the Logos
, he wrote.
Only John’s use gets it talk today [1] [2] [3]. Old Heraclitus is a little mentioned eccentric, forever standing in rivers [4] and celebrating change [5], while Philo is just a curiosity [6], not Christian and too Greek for today’s Jews. Once again, only Christianity keeps classical thought alive.
